Community advocates gather at first meeting for 2009

Members of the PCWF Community Advocacy Group (CAG) met for the first time last month at the Pimpama Recycled Water Treatment Plant.
The CAG was developed to provide a forum for disseminating information about the PCWF Master Plan to a cross section of the community.
Members of the CAG were chosen by a panel of judges including PCWF Program Manager Tom Silkstone.
“The panel was very impressed by the number of nominations that were received. Our CAG represents a broad cross section of the community, all with exceptional skills and attributes,” Mr Silkstone said.
“The CAG members will be working closely with us to disseminate information about the PCWF Master Plan, in particular the launch of Class A+ recycled water.”
“It is also vital that we understand issues that members of the community may have about the project and to ensure any concerns or questions are addressed as quickly as possible.”
CAG member and teacher at Coomera Anglican College Doctor Debra Tedman says she is delighted to be a part of the group.
“It is great to see people from so many walks of life, including young people who are the future, working together to institute measures that will lead to sustainable futures,” Dr Tedman said.
“I will be presenting at the International Middle Years of Schooling Association Annual Conference in Brisbane next month and I will be speaking about ‘connections that count’. I am so impressed by the CAG that I have ensured it is one of the major elements of my presentation.”
During the first meeting CAG members were treated to a site tour of the plant to learn about the Class A+ recycled water treatment process and the PCWF Master Plan in general. They were also given a sneak peak of the new collateral to be given out to the community in May.

PCWF Master Plan captured on film
The PCWF Master Plan will soon be featured on Nine Gold Coast News as part of a series focusing on sustainability initiatives.
The introduction of Class A+ recycled water in the Pimpama Coomera region will be the key focus of the eco-wrap special.
Coomera Waters homeowner Jules Davis agreed for her family to take part in the filming. The Davis family will soon be connected to Class A+ recycled water and were delighted to have their garden used as a backdrop during the filming process.
“One of the reasons we moved to Coomera Waters was because we would have access to recycled water to keep our garden alive,” Jules said.
“We look forward to being on television to help spread the word about Class A+ recycled water and its benefits.”
Meanwhile, another camera crew spent two days in the Pimpama Coomera region last month, collecting vision for a media slideshow and a corporate DVD for Gold Coast Water.
Vision was also taken at the Davis’ family home, the Recycled Water Treatment Plant and the Peanba Park reservoirs.
The corporate DVD will be used by Gold Coast Water, while the media slideshow will be distributed at the media launch of Class A+ recycled water later this year.

- Coomera Springs Display Village
Details on location times will be available on the Pimpama Coomera section of the Gold Coast Water website in the coming weeks.
Gold Coast Waterfuture scholarships encourage careers in water

Gold Coast student and Australian Duke of Edinburgh bronze award recipient, Jay Gorasia, has been awarded a Gold Coast Waterfuture Scholarship for demonstrating leadership potential in the water industry.
Jay is the fourth and final student to receive a scholarship that covers up to $15,000 towards the first year of his undergraduate degree and an opportunity to undertake work experience at Gold Coast Water during his study.
The scholarship signifies Gold Coast Water’s commitment to the city’s water future and an investment into the growth of specialist skills to meet demand in the rapidly developing water industry.
Jay has volunteered abroad and was an Event Coordinator for Round Square, a group of schools that are committed to personal development beyond academic excellence through service, adventure and international understanding.
Scholarship applicants were assessed on their academic results, personal achievements and their submission of an essay detailing ‘my interest in water resources’. Short-listed applicants were then interviewed by a panel consisting of two Gold Coast Water representatives.
The Waterfuture Scholarships were offered to students entering full-time study in the Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Information Technology courses at Griffith University, Gold Coast campus.

Creative skills flow for World Water Day

Recently Gold Coast Water invited all Gold Coast students to put their creative skills to the test by participating in the Gold Coast Water, World Water Day School Art Competition.
The competition was open to all prep, primary and secondary school students on the Gold Coast.
The students were asked to create an art piece that was based on the theme:
‘The value of a sustainable water future’
Over 400 entries were received and they were a great representation of the level of artistic talent by all year levels on the Gold Coast.
The inaugural art competition coincided with World Water Day (22 March) and was designed to raise awareness of the city’s precious water resources and how all members of the community should use them wisely. It was also designed to raise awareness for World Water Day and provided a new opportunity to engage the school communities on water sustainability.
The exciting competition forms a part of the 'Make your water mark!' Watersaver Education Program, which aims to engage students and the school community on water sustainability issues and conservation practices. This innovative curriculum package also features information on recycled water and the Pimpama Coomera region’s dual reticulation system.

The PCWF Master Plan aims to secure a sustainable water future for residents of the 7,700 hectare Pimpama Coomera region by significantly reducing the use of precious drinking water. It is Australia's largest integrated urban water cycle management program.
High quality Class A+ recycled water will be produced at a new recycled water plant in Pimpama. Class A+ recycled water will be supplied via a separate pipe network for non-drinking purposes such as toilet flushing, garden watering, car washing and external cleaning.
Rainwater tanks supply the cold water laundry tap and one optional external tap. Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) uses engineered landscaping features to help slow, reduce and filter stormwater run-off and improve environmental outcomes for Moreton Bay.
