Gold Coast City Council is proud to be providing the Pimpama Coomera region with one of the largest and most innovative water projects in Queensland through the Pimpama Coomera Waterfuture (PCWF) Master Plan.

In 2004, Gold Coast City Council, in partnership with the community, developed and adopted the PCWF Master Plan, with the goal of developing a fully integrated and sustainable urban water management system. Five years on and this $210 million investment is nearing completion.

2009 will be a year of celebration for Council and the Pimpama Coomera community, with the much anticipated unveiling of the Pimpama Recycled Water Treatment Plant later this year. This impressive plant will ensure Class A+ recycled water is produced for use in thousands of homes and businesses in the Pimpama Coomera region.

Coomera Chamber of Commerce Members given an exclusive tour of the Pimpama Recycled Water Treatment Plant

Members of the Coomera Chamber of Commerce kicked off their 2009 networking season at the Pimpama Recycled Water Treatment Plant (RWTP) earlier this month.

Chamber members inspected the newly constructed site and were treated to special presentation by Pimpama Coomera Waterfuture (PCWF) Alliance Program Manager, Tom Silkstone.

The RWTP was commissioned late last year and came about after 7600 cubic metres of concrete had been poured, 1150 tonnes of steel laid and 105 kilometres of cable installed.

It took in excess of 250,000 man hours to complete and pumps approximately 4 mega litres of Class B recycled water per day, with a capacity of 17 mega litres per day as demand grows.

Guests were also treated to a sneak peak of the recycled water treatment plant to learn how Class A+ recycled water is produced. Dual reticulated residents in the Pimpama and Coomera region will receive Class A+ recycled water in 2009 via separate purple pipes for toilet flushing and outdoor use.

Business operators and homeowners eligible for Class A+ recycled water can expect a significant saving on their water bill. The cost of Class A+ recycled water has been set at $1.10 a kilolitre for the 2008/09 financial year.  This is a saving of around 40 percent on the price of drinking water during the same period.

Water restrictions suspended but residents warned not to be complacent

image: washing car with bucket of water

Gold Coast residents are encouraged to be waterwise and use only what they need, despite water restrictions being suspended.

Heavy rainfall last month pushed water over the top of the Hinze Dam spillway.

The interim ease in water restrictions falls in line with the Queensland Water Commission’s (QWC) policy to suspend restrictions when dam levels reach 100 percent.

Residents are being reminded not to waste water, however town water can be used anytime to:

If Hinze Dam drops below 95 percent, the Gold Coast will revert back to South East Queensland restrictions.

What is the Pimpama Coomera Waterfuture Master Plan?

image: dual meter boxes

The PCWF Master Plan aims to secure a sustainable waterfuture for residents of the 7,700 hectare Pimpama Coomera region by significantly reducing the use of precious drinking water. It is Australia's largest integrated urban water cycle management program.

High quality Class A+ recycled water will be produced at a new recycled water plant in Pimpama. Class A+ recycled water will be supplied via a separate pipe network for non-drinking purposes such as toilet flushing, garden watering, car washing and external cleaning.

Rainwater tanks supply the cold water laundry tap and one optional external tap. Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) uses engineered landscaping features to help slow, reduce and filter stormwater run-off and improve environmental outcomes for Moreton Bay.

Take a look at the poster showing how homes in Pimpama Coomera will use multiple water sources (Adobe PDF 243kb).
