Water set to hit potable and recycled water reservoirs

Construction highlights

  • There are 44 concrete panels in each reservoir tank weighing 36 tonnes

  • A total of 1772 cubic tonnes of concrete have been used to construct the tanks which include 4 buttresses at 60 tonnes each

  • The tanks are 12 metres high with a diameter of 22 and 24 metres

The Peanba Park Road Reservoirs in Upper Coomera are due to be opened prior to Christmas following an extensive hydrostatic and water testing process.

A 25 mega litre drinking water reservoir and a 22 mega litre Class A+ recycled water reservoir have been built and will provide water supply and pressure to residents in the region.

Public comment welcomed for Stage Two of the Pimpama Wastewater Treatment Plant

image: purple pipes

Gold Coast City Council has called on community members to have their say on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Stage 2 of the Pimpama Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The Draft EIS examines recycled water management options to meet the projected population growth in the Pimpama Coomera region.

Pimpama Coomera is one of the fastest growing areas in south-east Queensland, with over 120,000 residents expected to live in the area by 2056.

The Draft EIS forms part of the Pimpama Coomera Waterfuture Master Plan. The Plan was developed in 2004 to manage all aspects of the water cycle by reducing drinking water use, capturing rainfall, managing stormwater and maximising recycled water use.

The Draft EIS is on display until 12 Dec 2008 at GCCC administration centres at Nerang and Bundall and can be downloaded from the website www.goldcoastwater.com.au/ pimpamacoomera.

Pimpama Coomera Waterfuture staff given sneak peak of Recycled Water Treatment Plant

image: PCWF Alliance team touring the Pimpama Wastewater Treatment Plant

Over 60 past and present PCWF Alliance team members were treated to a special site tour and luncheon in October, to celebrate the commissioning of the Pimpama Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

The WWTP came about after 7600 cubic metres of concrete had been poured, 1150 tonnes of steel laid and 105 kilometres of cable installed.

It took in excess of 250,000 man hours to complete and pumps approximately 4 mega litres of Class B recycled water per day, with a capacity of 17 mega litres per day as demand grows.

Guests were also treated to a sneak peak of the Class A+ Recycled Water Treatment Plant (RWTP) that is due for completion later this year.

Assisi Catholic College makes its water mark

A leading school in the Pimpama Coomera region has made its mark on water conservation.

Assisi Catholic College was acknowledged for its environmental efforts at a special presentation during Water Week in October 2008.

Students were presented with Environmental Care and Water Quality Care Awards, for their watersaver studies.

From early 2009, Assisi will be connected to Class A+ recycled water for toilet flushing and external use. The school also has extensive water sensitive landscaping.

Council's Water Management Chair and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Daphne McDonald and Divisional Councillor Donna Gates attended the event and took the opportunity to launch a new Watersaver Education Program.

"The 'Make your water mark!' Watersaver Education Program provides teachers and students with resources that are relevant, fresh, based on water conservation strategies and case studies specific to the Gold Coast. It is also fun and aims to encourage wise water behaviour in the long term," said Cr McDonald.

More information about the Watersaver Education Program can be found at www.goldcoastwater.com.au/makeyourwatermark or call 1300 366 692.

Save on your water bill by using Class A+ recycled water

image: residents washing car with Class A+ recycled water

Class A+ recycled water will provide users in the Pimpama Coomera region with savings on their water bill.

The cost of Class A+ recycled water has been set at $1.10 a kilolitre for the 2008/09 financial year. This means homeowners and businesses connected to the Class A+ recycled water network will be able to use Class A+ recycled water for specific non-drinking purposes for around 50 percent on the price of drinking water during the same period.

Class A+ recycled water will be delivered through a separate pipe network that is coloured purple for easy identification, including water mains, meters, pipes, taps and hoses.

Residents will be encouraged to use Class A+ recycled water in a variety of ways including garden watering and irrigation, washing cars, toilet flushing and external household cleaning.

Remember, if you conserve your use of Class A+ recycled water, you can save money on your recycled water bills.

Water restrictions unlikely to affect dual reticulated residents from mid 2009

Gold Coast City Council has assured dual reticulated residents that there will be no high level water restrictions when Class A+ recycled water is introduced next year.

This will be welcomed news for over 3000 residents and businesses in the Pimpama Coomera region currently on South East Queensland water restrictions.

At present, households are allowed limited use of a hand held hose fitted with a twist or trigger nozzle to wash vehicles, clean external surfaces of houses, buildings materials and equipment and water gardens and plants for half an hour between 4pm and 4.30pm on Saturdays (odd numbered properties) and Sunday for even or unnumbered properties).

Business and industry must continue to use water efficiently by operating in accordance with Water Efficiency Management Plans, retrofitting with water efficient devices and following best practice guidelines where applicable.

For more information on water restrictions visit the Gold Coast Water website or contact the Queensland Water Commission on 1300 789 906.

What is the Pimpama Coomera Waterfuture Master Plan?

The PCWF Master Plan aims to secure a sustainable waterfuture for residents of the 7,700 hectare Pimpama Coomera region by significantly reducing the use of precious drinking water. It is Australia's largest integrated urban water cycle management program.

High quality Class A+ recycled water will be produced at a new recycled water plant in Pimpama. Class A+ recycled water will be supplied via a separate pipe network for non-drinking purposes such as toilet flushing, garden watering, car washing and external cleaning.

Rainwater tanks supply the cold water laundry tap and one optional external tap. Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) uses engineered landscaping features to help slow, reduce and filter stormwater run-off and improve environmental outcomes for Moreton Bay. Take a look at the poster showing how homes in Pimpama Coomera will use multiple water sources (Adobe PDF 243kb).
